Chapter Thirteen

Zev

I break my eyes open out of a dead sleep, almost like I’ve been slapped in the face without warning, but instead of my cheek burning, it’s my entire body. I’ve never felt anything like this in the past. Intense worry and fear shudder through my body until I’m physically shaking. I try to sit up, but still, I shake, and I realize it’s like my body has a mind of its own right now.

“Jasper . . .” I call out for my roommate, who happens to have so much knowledge. I pray he’ll be able to figure out what’s going on with my body, to give me some sort of answer. Now, in addition to the shaking, my hands are sweaty, and I feel balls of sweat dripping down my face. “Jasper!” I call out even louder, nervousness evident in my voice.

Within a few moments, my friend’s pulled off his headphones and is coming right up to me. “Whoa, what’s going on?”

“If I knew that, I wouldn’t have called for you.” My reply is a bit smartassed, but he knows when I’m struggling, I don’t really have another mode to go in. I’m not the type of man who prefers to show fear, so this is a bit difficult.

“What happened? What were you doing a moment ago?” Jasper asks with narrowed brows.

“N-nothing. I’d just laid down for a quick nap before afternoon classes. How long was I out?” I look into his eyes, and he brings his wrist up, looking at his watch.

“We’ve only been back here for ten minutes,” Jasper tells me.

Fuck, I must’ve been tired.

No good. She’s in trouble.

My inner wolf speaks to me out of nowhere. “Roxana. Where’s Roxana?” I ask, looking to Jasper.

He immediately shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know. Let me call Minnie.” Jasper pulls his phone out, taps away, and then brings it to his ear. “Hey, is Roxana with you . . . no, we thought she was with you . . .” Jasper pauses and looks at me. “Yeah, we’ve got a problem. Get a team together from your dorm of our pack members and have them scouring the grounds for her. I don’t like the way Zev’s looking at me right now . . . okay, yeah, bye.” Jasper hangs up the phone and inhales sharply. “So, she’s not with Minnie, obviously, but I have a group going around now looking for her.”

I give him a curt nod while I process this, and as I do so, I begin to realize the feeling coursing through my bones is emptiness. I feel incomplete, like part of me is missing. “I can’t feel her, Jasper. I can’t fucking feel her,” I end up rambling my inner thoughts, and Jasper nods his head like he’s thinking.

I push myself off the bed even though my body’s barely listening to me, and I begin pacing through our dorm. I have to do something right now. I need to move. I have to distract myself as much as possible, so pacing seems the quickest way to do it.
